Differentiated Instruction
This instructional approach is based on the idea that teachers must use strategic active planning to meet the needs of students where they are at the time of instruction. Teachers must help students to access, understand and apply learning by knowing their students’ readiness levels, interests and learning profiles; and strategically planning options for learning based on these factors.

Formative Assessment
This approach is focused on identifying and building upon a student’s prior knowledge and skills and adjusting instruction to meet identified needs. Most teachers incorporate various aspects of formative assessment, but do not systematically practice this approach. The gains from formative assessment are “among the largest ever reported for educational interventions” (Black & William, 1998).

Data-Driven Decision-Making
Teachers and schools collect massive amounts of data, but how much thought gone into planning what data should be collected? Is there a system in place for ongoing analysis of data and pinpoint areas in need of improvement? Finally, are actions taken and outcomes evaluated based on data analysis? Parent Workshops

Research indicates that parental involvement is associated with higher student achievement outcomes. The No Child Left Behind Act placed a great deal of focus on the importance of meaningful parental involvement and the need to inform parents about their child’s progress. Federal funding is available for public and private schools to support parental involvement activities, including parent training.

Establishing Expectations
A 2005 Harvard meta-analysis study on parent involvement and student achievement revealed that the aspect of parental involvement that had the greatest impact on academic achievement was parental expectations (Jeynes, 2005).
